| Definition: | Calcineurin, a calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine/threonine protein phosphatase is a heterodimeric protein consisting of a catalytic subunit calcineurin A, which contains an active site dinuclear metal center, and a myristoylated, calcium-binding subunit, calcineurin B. Calcineurin is activated in the Wnt signaling pathway through increased levels of cytoplasmic calcium. Activated calcineurin dephosphoylates Nuclear Factor of Activated T cells (NFAT), thus allowing for translocation of NFAT from the cytosol to the nucleus where it up-regulates target genes. |
